SILVERSTEIN, Rose (b. 1870 - 1871, d. abt 1945)
Note: NAME: Rose Silverstein, if born in Eastern Europe, may have been Roza Zil'bershtejn [Yiddish] or Silberstein [German] from Zel'bershtejn.

Zil'bershtram and Zil'bershtrom were names found in Brest by Alexander Beider.

According the Alexender Beider (opus. cit.) the Yiddish name for a stone of
silver is "zilbershteyn" and the German is Silberstein

Roza may have been the Yiddish for redhead or rosy cheeks. Silverstein is
"litharge" or "lead monozide" and was a name assumed by a jeweler. ["A
Dictionary of Jewish Names and their History", Benzion C. Kaganoff].

RAPPAPORT, Paul (b. 1866, d. 1945)
Note: today in Belarus
Note: HISTORY: The Rappoport family name goes back to Abraham Menachem ben Jacob ha-Kohen Rappa (Rapa), who lived in the town of Porto (Northern Italy) at the beginning of the 16th century. According to another version, the surname appeared after the marriage of persons names Rappa and Porto. ("A Dictionary of Jewish Surnames From the Russian Empire" by Alexander Beider, Avotanyu

The name Rappa is derived from Rappe' [Middle High German] raven. Members of the family Rap(p)oport are considered to be of Kohen origin. (EJ 13:1552 Encyclopeadia Judaica).

Brest-Litovsk had a Jewish population of 8,235 in 1847.
27,005 in 1889
30,608 in 1897
The city was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1895 and again in 1901. In the pogroms in the wake of the 1905 revolution several Jews in Brest Litovsk were wounded or killed. Jews comprised 70124f the population prior to World War I.

In a letter, 17 July 1994, Audrey E. Berger's research stated that Paul manufactured Show Cases, he also invented a stamp dispensing machine. His brother, Meyer, was the infamous "B'yalestoka Magad."

"Bialystok (Russian - Belostok) is an industrial city in N.E. Poland; latterly one of the principal Russian/Polish Jewish centers; incorporated into Russia between 1807 and 1921 and administered by the U.S.S.R. between 1939 and 1941, reverting to Poland in 1945. ... Jewish settlement in the village of Bialystok was encouraged by the manorial overlords, the counts of Branicki.
In 1745 the Bialystok community became self-governing.

The position of the Jews deteriorated when Bialystok passed to Prussia (1795), and subsequently to Russia.

The development of the large textile industry in Bialystok after the Napoleonic wars owes much to Jewish enterprise.

The Jewish labor movement found strong support in Bialystok, and in 1897 many Jewish workers there became members of the Bund. The intensive activities of the labor movement in Bialystok during the Russian revolution of 1905-06 provoked savage acts of reprisal by the Russian authorities. The pogroms in Bialystok that occurred between June 1 and 3, 1906, were the most violent in the mob outbreaks against Russina Jewry that year, resulting in 70 Jews being killed and 90 gravely injured. The commission of inquiry later appointed by the Duma to investigate the circumstances surrounding the pogrom held both the local police and the central authorities to blame for the tragedy." [Encyclopaedia Judaica, Vol.4 B, 1973]

I am researching the "Maggid of Bialystok". The Hasidim did have one of the first centers in that town, NE of Warshaw.

Note: Was 1908 before 1920 Census. I combined information attributed to Ruth
Note: NAME: Gittel or Gittil from the transformation of Gutte to Gitta. Gutte is from the German translation Gšte. The name has it's origins in Hebrew. Non-biblical. "A good woman." Probably the equivalent of the male name Tobiyah. ["Jewish Personal Names...Their Origin, Derivation and Diminutive Forms", Rabbi Shmuel Gorr, edited by Chaim Freedman, Avotaynu, Inc. NJ 1992].
